ABSTRACT

Confinement within institutions, such as prisons reformation and detention facilities as a method of punishment has been a universally accepted practice since time immemorial. While imprisonment has remained the central form of punishment in the criminal justice system, the emphasis, on correction rather than punishment has steadily increased. Many scholars and activist are therefore re-examining the essence of prisons as an institutions of punishment in our societies today. The efficacy of imprisonment is scrutinized and the notion of crime is problematic, one effect of this, is that prisons regularly receive back almost half of those they reformed and rehabilitated (Recidivist). The persistence of the problem have also been attributed to the lack of capacity; between the declared objectives of reformation and rehabilitation, and the prisons practical realities. This study looks at the measures taken to rehabilitate inmates in prisons in Kaduna State. The participants were Seventy (70) respondents. The results show that the  idea of rehabilitation is that people are not permanently criminal and that it is possible to restore a criminal to useful life, a life to which the society will appreciate him and his family too. The rationale behind rehabilitation of inmate is to prevent habitual offending also known as criminal recidivist rather than punishing the criminal, rehabilitation could seek the means of education or therapy, to bring inmate into mental and more normal state of mind, or into an attitude which could be helpful to society, rather than be harmful to society. Based on the finding it was recommended that the federal and state government in Nigeria must take critical interest on the issue of proper measure of rehabilitation in Kaduna prison seriously especially in the area of physical planning, budgeting and provision of service.
